Blue Like Jazz

Blue Like Jazz by Donald Miller was a good read...not a great read, but good.  Miller's conversational style is fun to read, and he paints this period of his life with honesty, realism, and a bit of humor.  The book is more of a collection of essays than a novel, based on his journey to find what he believes about God during college and just post-college.  He name drops some other writers/speakers including a writer from Oregon who writes novels about fly fishing (I can't remember his name, but Patrick has read one of his books), Joshua Harris, and Ravi Zacharias.  I didn't always agree with his theology, and a few times I just wanted to sit him down to talk some sense into him.  I enjoyed the book and even laughed out loud during one chapter.  It is not a book that I would universally recommend, but I am not sorry that I read it.

Thanks for the review - I think this book is on my reading challenge list. I won't put it at the top of my list - of course nothing is getting read until Anna is finished. I am getting closer...

Thanks for the review! I liked this book and his writing style quite a bit. I enjoyed that he was willing to think outside the box about his faith. I appreciate your thoughts on this!

That's so funny, Lynn - we must have VERY similar taste in books because I thought much of the same thing. I read that book a few years ago when it was all the rage around here and it was an easy read, but my first reaction was, "Eh, it was OK." Thanks for your review!

Finally, a book you review that I actually have read! Easy to read and a bit quirky. We read it as a Sunday School Class. I was thinking you could review some classics that are more at my reading level like Corduroy, The Mitten, The Little Engine that Could. Just kidding- I love to read your book reviews.

A friend of my husband's gave us this book awhile ago and I started it but could never get into it. I wonder if it's in storage?? Hmmm - interesting to read your review though. The guy that gave it to us LOVED it...I guess he frequently hands out copies or something? :)

I was very glad I read this book. I come from a very conservative area where fitting in the box seems to be so important and I don't think that was God's intention for any of us. This book reminded me that ALL need to come to the saving grace of Jesus Christ and sometimes it takes stepping out of the box to show the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
