Why "Rohal Call"?

Funny story flashback....

So, after we had just started dating, Patrick sat me down....

P: "I need to talk to you about something."

me: (thinking) Ohhhhh no!  What terrible thing from his past is he about to confess to me?  Does he want to break up with me already?  Did I hurt his feelings?

P:  "So I thought if we are going to date, I should make sure you know how to pronounce my last name."

me:  sigh of relief...  "Are you kidding me?  That's it?!?!"

P:  "It is pronounced like "roll"... ya know, "tootsie roll", "roll down a hill", "dinner roll"

me:  (laughing)  "Why don't you correct people when they say it wrong?"  ...mind you, I didn't say it wrong...I think I just avoided saying it....sheer brilliance there.  :o)

P:  "I don't know.  It just doesn't really bother me when they get it wrong."

Fast forward to today...

After several people have asked me recently how to correctly pronounce my last name, I thought this may be post worthy.  It may help you understand why my title is in fact catchy...get it....pronounced "Roll Call"...NOT "row-hall call"

THAT is so cute. Oh yes, the dreaded, "we have to talk about something". So glad it was about the last name you would one day receive, huh? ;)

Too funny! When Lance and I were dating we had the same conversation about his last name - all our college friends mispronounce it. It is ch E ney not Ch A ney.

I got our blog title and thought it was very clever :o)

Check out my blog today - a post in honor of you!

Yeah, people don't even attempt our last name, which is why we so often shorten it to Schmike. But just to make you feel better, I got the play on words in your title! :)

I was pronouncing it right - mostly because of you blog name. I figured that was how it had to be said! Our last name is mispronounced by most everyone, so we just answer to it!

I for one respond to any form of Kris...no matter the ending. I do correct people if it seems they care about getting it right. Sometimes, it just doesn't seem to matter all that much.

My husband's name always gets butchered. The good thing is we always know when a telemarketer is calling!

Wow. I had always pronounced it "Roll." I never thought about pronouncing it "Row-hal." Can I do that now? ;-D

I always read Roll too - and trust me - I can TOTALLY relate!

Laughing! Totally had to be told by Jason that I was saying Patrick's name wrong. And, I remember him telling me that Patrick hated correcting people when they said it wrong.

And now it is your name...*sigh*...and I got to play just a little, tiny part in that! :)

I can totally relate to the mispronounced last name...in fact, I'm always surprised when someone whom we never met before pronounces it correctly! Thankfully, I already knew the correct pronunciation before John & I started dating, so we never had the official talk. :)

The funny thing is, when I first met Patrick, I didn't even think of another way of pronouncing it other than "roll"... and as you've mentioned before, it's a sure bet you'll never use the name Cassie for one of your children!

Cassie Rohal - that would be FUNNY!!! As would a little girl whose nickname would be Tootsie.

I must admit, I think I've been thinking "row-hall" when I look at your blog title, but I never pondered it any further than that.

Believe me, even a very common last name like Stauffer can be pronounced a hundred different ways by telemarketers!!

I'm so glad I know how to pronounce your last name now! I have tried many different variations and none of them were even close the "roll!" Ha, ha! Too bad you guys aren't Alabama Fans, I think there are a lot of rednecks (I'm one of them so it's okay for me to say that!) that would die to be able to name their blog Rohal Tide! :0)

I'm definitely guilty of have pronouncing your name wrong. I'm not even sure how I was corrected.
Our last name is a bear as well. Many people mispronounce it as Salad (as in the food)-a (it's in fact Soliday) and we let that one slide. For us, as long as you get the long "a" at the end, you're good. Life would be easier if it were pronounced like the brand of tea or the Spanish word for salad, however.

You can tell your husband that I have been reading your title correctly this whole time! :-) Cute. Nice way to get you in a panic while you are dating. Atleast he could have come up with something a little more traumatic! :-)

Glad you clarified that, I was guilty of pronouncing it as it looks. My name is simple , Fox, but you wouldn't believe how many people ask me to spell it, I think they think I'm saying the 4 letter F word, and when I tell them F-o-x, their like ohh!

I was saying ro-hall. I thought you were just being witty. Now I know you are really witty.

My last name is Haag. I wish it was spelled Haig or Hague. It might actually get pronounced the right way. What do I get 99% of the time?

Hagg. As in old hagg.

I can totally relate! I think I asked Pat how to pronouce it when I first met him. I'm so used to people mispronouncing my last name that either I ask how to pronounce a name or don't use it at all! At least it lets you know when telemarketers are calling!

I can definitely relate about the last name, Ro-hal; I had that last name for about 8 years, so I know exactly. Love, Cheryl/Mom
