Tiny Talk Tuesday

(reading to Adeline the story of the Israelites coming out of Egypt)
A:  And if there's no pillar of cloud or fire, then they just use maps.
C:  Goliath was there before the cloud and the fire.

__________________________

Me:  Adeline, God gave you such a pretty voice.  I hope you use your voice to glorify Him.  Maybe you can sing in the children's choir someday, just like your daddy sings in the choir at church.
A:  Daddy, you don't have a pretty voice though.  You have a handsome voice.

___________________________

A:  So, mommy, when you're a grandma, I'll be big and strong like a mommy?
___________________________

A:  Mommy, my name is Rapunzel.......(a little later).....when you call Rapunzel, I FEEL like Rapunzel.

___________________________

C:  "God doesn't get boo boos."

Tiny Talk Tuesday

Grandma:  "Camille, come here so Grandma can help you blow your nose.  If you blow your nose you will breathe so much better."
C:  "I don't WANNA bweathe!!!"
_______________________________________

A:  Daddy, we're never gonna die.
D:  Of course we'll die, Adeline.  Everybody dies.
A: (thoughtfully)  It's taking us a long time to die.

_____________________________________

A:  I have a hypothesis.

______________________________________

A:  "Wow!  It rhymes!  We are the ROHALS" (pronounced with a slight long u vowel), "and we have RULES!" (pronounced with the same vowel)

Tiny Talk Tuesday

A:  "Bunny likes to have lunch first and then have breakfast."

_________________________

A:  "Paw paw, you're old."

This was a conversation between Rock and his mother, Rachel, last week after Rock and Adeline played together while Rachel and I had Biblestudy.

Rock:  "Two times, mommy."
Rach:  "What do you mean, Rock?"
Rock:  "Two times I kissed Adeline.  One was a regular kiss and one was a love kiss.  I hugged her too."
Rach:  "What is a love kiss?"
Rock:  "You know, a love kiss."
Rachel, unable to get a better description from her 3yo son, decided to pump Adeline for info when she had her in the church nursery the following Sunday.
Rach:  "So, Adeline, I hear Rock gave you a kiss on Thursday."
Adeline:  Smiles and blushes slightly.
Rach:  "What kind of kiss was it?"
Adeline:  "A sweet kiss."

Patrick already warned Rock that he's keeping an eye on him...

After bath time, I told Adeline to put on some clean pant*ies.  After standing in front of her armoire for some time, she says....

A:  "Mommy, I'm going to wear the flowered ones because grandma planted flowers today, and daddy planted flowers today, so I'm going to pick these because they have flowers on them."

This will be especially funny to a few people who know me well...

Tiny Talk Tuesday

me:  "It's getting close to lunch time.  Are you guys hungry?"
Rock: "No, I'm not hungry."
A:  "No, we're getting married right now."
Rock:  "Yeah, we already are married.  Let's go back to our house."  (also known as the play room)
_____________________________

me:  "Where did grandma take you for dinner?!?"
the girls:  "CHICK-FIL-A!!!!"
me:  "And then where did you go for ice cream?"
A:  "We went to Old McDonalds!"

Adeline and I were looking at pictures...
A:  "Look!  There's daddy in his work pj's!"  (also known as his uniform)....

Tiny Talk Tuesday

Linus and Violet, are at our house.  Adeline tells everyone she needs to go potty and goes into the bathroom.  This must remind Linus that he, too, needs to use the potty.  He promptly follows her in the bathroom and pulls down his pants.  The following dialogue ensues...

A:  Why do you have a tail?
L:  I DON'T have a TAIL!!!
A:  Yes you do.
L:  Peoples don't have tails! (the plural makes this statement even cuter).

_______________________________

Camille is starting to talk, and talk, and talk.  Soon, daddy will not have any brain space left for all the words "his girls" throw at him (yes, that includes me) at the end of the day.  Some of Camille's favorites...

choo choo!!!

gock gock (rock, rock)

I unt dat (I want that)

Ad-yine (Adeline)

Daddy

Mommy

pa pa

gahma (Grandma)

elcome (said for both thank you AND you're welcome)

Crash!

Tiny Talk Tuesday

Pat:  Adeline, it is so late that I am only going to read you one book tonight.
A:  How about two?
Pat:  Okay, we can read two.
A:  (without missing a beat) How about three?
____________________

A:  I'm not your mommy.
me:  I hope not!
A:  You're MY mommy.
me:  Yes, sweetheart.
A:  and that other one's the daddy.
me:  which one?
A:  (thinks for a minute)  daddy.

me (reading The Velveteen Rabbit to Adeline):  "The Rabbit sighed.  He longed to become Real."
A (looking at the drawing of the boy sleeping with his Rabbit):  Is that Camille?
me:  No, honey, this story is about a boy.
A:  Why is he longing to be Camille?
...it took me a while to figure out what she meant, but then I realized how hilarious this is!

And, although this one isn't from one of my kids, A coworker told me this story about when she was talking with her friend's two year old...

coworker:  "What does a cow say?"
2yo:  "Eat more chicken."

I love it!

Tiny Talk Tuesday

Pat:  What does a doctor do?
A:  They clean out your heart.

______________________

P:  Are you a doctor?
A:  I'm going to fix you.
A:  and then I'll fix me and mommy, but not Camille
(because she screams and then Adeline gets in trouble....not because she wants her sister to be "broken").

A:  and mommy, you are getting a hair cut (as she uses all manner of instruments to play with my hair)....and then me and daddy and Camille will get haircuts.  But not Miss Christie, because she's at home.

A:  "What time is it?"
Me:  "It's three twenty-one."
A:  "Mine is eleven, fifty, ten."

Tiny Talk Tuesday

While reading the story of Jonah...
me:  "Jonah didn't obey God, and there were consequences for his actions.  Just like you have consequences when you don't obey mommy and daddy."
A:  "I could be in a whale's belly."

Tiny Talk Tuesday

While reading the story of Jairus and his sick little daughter...

A:  "They didn't have an ambulance."

_______________________

Patrick and Adeline playing hide and seek...

A:  1, 2, 3, ..........10!!!  Ready or not, here I come!!!  Are you in the closet?  Nooooo.  Are you under the table?  Noooo...  (daddy gives a running commentary of where he's looking so she won't get bored, so that's how she plays too).  Are you under the bench?  Nooooo....  Are you under here?  (as she bends down to look under our entertainment center....about two inches of space under there).  precious.
________________________

Me:  Adeline, you are going to be three soon.  You need to keep practicing peeing in the potty.  You are going to be a big girl like Amelie, and Violet, and Anna.  You need to stay dry so you can wear big girl panties like them.

A:  and wear big girl panties like mommy?

Me:  Yes, like mommy.

A:  and like Linus?

Me:  No, Linus is a boy.  He doesn't wear panties, but he is learning to use the potty like you.

A:  Like Mrs. Salada?

Me:  uh huh

A:  and Mr. Salada wears big girl panties.

Me:  trying not to lose all sense of composure....  No, Mr. Salada is a man.  He wears underwear.

Tiny Talk Tuesday

A: "Daddy will be home soon."
me: "No, sweetie. Daddy will be home before supper."
A: "I will give him a kiss."
me: "Aww, sweetheart, I'm sure daddy would love that."
A: "That will make him happy."
_______________

A: "Here mommy..." (handing me a slice of her tangerine)
me: "Oh, Adeline, that is such good sharing."
A: "Here Camille (reaching a slice in Camille's direction)....just pretend." (and then Adeline eats it)
________________

me: "Adeline, did you do a good job obeying Mrs Fix today? Did you play nicely with Rock?"
A: "No...I had to sit on the step."
________________

It was a hectic morning, and I had just given Adeline her breakfast while I was tending to Camille...
A: "Mommy, we forgot to pray to Jesus."

________________

Adeline is laying on the floor to have her diaper changed. She wants her bunny and starts to get up.

me: "Here Adeline, I'll get her for you."
A: "No mommy, don't wake up bunny."

They don't need to be taught...

...how to sin.
_________________
A: "Mommy, I need you to open the door." (we got a chain lock for the sliding door to our deck after a friend's daughter escaped while she was in the shower...she was fine, but it scared me since Adeline knows how to take out the security bar, unlock the door, and go out to play).

me: "No honey, we are going to stay inside right now. Go play with your friends."

A: "Daddy, can you please open the door for me?"

Pat: "Mommy already told you no, and so you don't come to ask daddy when mommy already answered you. Daddy and mommy will always agree."

A: walks to my right around the table..."Mr Salada, I would like you to open the door please."
at which point the adults in the room are trying hard to not bust out laughing.

Mr S: "Well, Adeline, mommy and daddy already told you, no. So, you probably shouldn't be asking me."

A: Without missing a beat, Adeline walks around to the other side of the table. "Mrs. Salada, would you unlock the door for me, please?"

Mrs S: "Adeline, your mommy and daddy said no. They are in charge of you. You need to obey them. Now, go play."

Content that she had exhausted all her options, Adeline ran off happily and played.

___________________

A: "Mommy, can I wear my Thomas shirt today?"
me: "no, you can wear it tonight when you go to bed."
A: "I can ask daddy when daddy gets home."
She clearly missed the lesson from the door incident...

I came home from work and Adeline and her friend, Rock were watching a movie. After they left, we had this conversation...
A: "Mommy, I want to watch the movie again."
me: "No, sweetheart. We only watch one movie a day, and it is all done."
A: "Mrs Fix said I could watch it again."
hmm...somehow I doubt that Mrs Fix, who isn't here, said you could continue watching movies to your heart's content.

Did you notice the theme? This week's Tiny Talk Tuesday focused on recent examples of my daughter lying and manipulating. We didn't teach her how to do these things (although I'm sure we provide examples more than we care to believe). I know this behavior is "normal." I don't think she is unusually rebellious, according to earthly standards, but that's not the standard.

Children are not born innocent. Sure, they don't understand there are things like pornography, murder, and rape. However, we need to teach our children (and ourselves) things like kindness, mercy, self-control, and patience. We don't need to teach them how to lie, cheat, and be selfish. Those things are at our core. These stories are cute, but they also remind me that my heart is rebellious too, and I need the grace of God each and every day. Even though we laugh when their sin is so obvious, it is something to take seriously. I pray that God will soften Adeline's heart and give us wisdom to train her heart to choose what is right, true, and lovely.

Patrick is reading The Jesus Storybook Bible with Adeline. There is a picture of Pharaoh riding in a chariot holding a spear.
A: "A horse and buggy!!!"

______________

Daddy: "I am going to count to ten and then it is time to get out of the bathtub."
A: "No counting to ten, daddy. Count to 59."

Tiny Talk Tuesday

A: "I'm going to cook something and it will be very, very hot."

_____________

Adeline taking grapes off of a bunch...one of them still had a stem attached...

A: "Mommy, I can't open this grape."

_____________

Adeline loves to sit on the sink in our bathroom when I am putting on makeup. Patrick just rolls his eyes as she names all the items (she's such a girl). My favorite is "EYE liner!!!" Sometimes I give her a little bit of lotion to dab on her cheeks. She turns her head back and forth admiring herself in the mirror and says, "I look pretty!!!"

One day after I put on my makeup and reviewed the names of each thing with her, I found her "on the phone" in my bedroom. This was the conversation...

A: "Hi mascara. How are you?....... Are you good? Hi mascara!!!"
_______________________

Camille starts screaming in the playroom...

Me: "Adeline, did you make Camille fuss?"
A: "yeah....I was changing her diaper."
Me: "Where did you hurt her?"
A: "Her face."
Me: "What did you do to her face?"
A: "I spanked her." "I'm sorry Camille...."

Well at least you're sorry for hitting her and making her scream....yeah, mommy somehow didn't think that was enough penance.

_______________________

Daddy: "It's dark in here (when putting Adeline to bed). I can't see you. Oh wait, here's your head, and your arms, and your belly, and your legs (tickling her)."

A: "and here's my pO pO and my girl parts."

Yeah, daddy...why skip from the belly to legs? There are parts in between there......I just love her innocence.

Me: "Tell her what is in the pictures, sweetheart."
A: holds the book in front of Camille so she can see it...
"A birdie, baby Camille. See the birdie?!?"
I was desperately trying to find the video camera. This was SUCH a sweet moment. I love my girls.
